Samenvatting

Much patient uncertainty can be seen in studies on the chronically ill. To determine if this is true of Parkinson's disease patients, interview data were obtained from 23 such patients in the Netherlands. Analysis reveals indications of uncertainty in 20 cases. In 12 cases, a specific context of uncertainty was found in terms of a failing trust, bodily capacity, the patients themselves, & the world outside the home. Three reasons behind such perceptions of failing trust could be identified: (1) the declining naturalness & unpredictability of bodily functions; (2) a social explanation in terms of events outside the home; & (3) interpretative repertoires connected with the usage of the Dutch language. 36 References.
