Samenvatting

Examines teaching from the standpoint of occupational sociology to determine reasons for the alleged status devaluation of the profession. Proceeding from T. J. Johnson's Professions and Power (1972), teaching is viewed as a state-mediated profession, Teachers' professional status is changing due to decentralized government policies & the introduction of new management techniques in the areas of budgets, merit pay, & teacher evaluation. Aspects of these developments indicating deprofessionalization are examined. Teachers employ a variety of strategies to improve their job, eg, imitating market relationships, amelioration of workplace conditions, & reprofessionalization. 43 References.
