Samenvatting

The applicability of Henk A. Becker's cohort-based theory of generation formation (1985) & Ronald Inglehart's theory (1977) of a silent revolution to the process of generation formation in the Netherlands was empirically examined through analysis of repeated cross-sectional data. Cohort replacement was found to be of little importance in bringing about sociocultural change. Inglehart's silent revolution conceptualization appears applicable, at least temporarily, to citizen values, but not to political styles. No support for Becker's proposed generational pattern was found using either between-generations analysis or analyses of five-year cohorts. 3 Tables, 10 Figures, 2 Appendixes, 39 References.
