Samenvatting

Defining social well-being positively in terms of social support & affiliation, & negatively in terms of social threat & separation, the hypothesis that neighbors who share common lifestyles enjoy greater social well-being in their neighborhood is tested with questionnaire data obtained in 1991/92 from 406 residents of Groningen, Netherlands. The results suggest that an alternative explanation, based on a relationship between lifestyle similarity & degree of disturbance, is not tenable; the original hypothesis is confirmed. Additionally, the relationship between lifestyle similarity & social well-being of these respondents could be attributed for the most part to a preponderance of working residents & students. The relationship does not hold for those who are unemployed, retired, or working as housekeepers, as was predicted by the original hypothesis. 2 Tables, 4 Figures, 31 References.
