Samenvatting

Tests the hypothesis that ethnocentrism in the Netherlands increased, 1985-1991, among disadvantaged groups but decreased among the more privileged groups, based on 1990 interviews with a sample (N not provided) drawn from a 1985 public opinion survey. Analysis reveals that ethnocentrism increased for both higher & lower socioeconomic groups, indicating a decrease in the tolerance level of Dutch social culture. Several possible explanations are reviewed, including theories about scapegoats & the removal of social taboos on criticizing other groups. 47 References. Adapted from the source document.
