Samenvatting

Reconsiders the relationship between the art object & the onlooker in a theoretical framework assuming man to be a biologically adaptive organism. Art works are viewed as significant objects with aesthetic value. The framework presented for the analysis of art experience & judgment is suitable for a critical sociology of art. This framework is applied in a discussion of Pierre Bourdieu's Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgment of Taste (1984) & other works by his followers, where artistic judgment is thought to be determined by level of achieved social position & the strategies used to improve one's position. 41 References.
