A reexamination of the emergence of a new autonomous youth culture in the 1960s focuses on explanations articulating idealized notions of romance. Conventional explanations consider accelerated social changes as secondary effects of broader demographic & institutional shifts. The youth culture, characterized by new patterns in family social interaction, the rise of consumerism, & the increased importance of leisure, adopted the authoritatively hedonistic anthems of pop music, especially US rock & roll music.
