Dutch social scientists contributed to the construction of the welfare state after WWII. Here, a historical sketch is presented of welfare ideologies. The design & redesign of society has been a key problem for politicians as well as for social scientists. Voluntaristic issues comprise a part of the political decision-making process; however, rational elements founded on scientific knowledge are also necessary. Currently, the welfare state is being rebuilt under the influence of free market ideology. The social sciences will continue to play a key role in this process. 16 References.
