Samenvatting

The journal Sociologische Gids was established in 1953 in the Netherlands with an orientation toward US functionalism. An analysis of the journal's first twenty years shows that the emphasis on form & methodology rather than content was successful in ensuring a scientific foundation. Later, the journal absorbed other sociological publications, & by the 1960s, it was the leading Dutch sociological publication, stimulating the professionalization of sociologists by establishing an ethical research code & a modern professional orientation. Later various paradigms emerged in sociology, & other journals gained in prominence. Although Sociologische Gids still enjoys a solid reputation, it is no longer dominant. 3 References.
