Samenvatting

To investigate the causes of gender disparities in job quality for Dutch university graduates, life course data were collected from alumni (N = 8,000) of Wageningen Agricultural U, 1973-1992. Indicators of job quality included: (1) occupational prestige, (2) salary, (3) required educational level, & (4) job security. As of 1992, women continued to score lower on all 4 indicators, although the gap was narrowing. Two counterbalancing factors were: (A) the inflation of academic credentials to the point where possession of a university degree in the 1990s does not provide the same advantages that it did in the 1970s; & (B) women's liberation, bringing more women into the paid labor force, lowering discrimination barriers, raising educational expectations, & increasing the level of social acceptance of married women working outside the home. 7 Tables, 23 References.
