Samenvatting

A critical response to Willem De Blécourt's proposed distinction between culture & folk culture (see SA 44:3/9508017). De Blécourt does not seem to be fully acquainted with the findings of the Folklore Commission or the J. P. Meertens Instit to investigate folklore in a new light. Similarly, he seems unaware of the fact that over the past two decades, folklore studies have been less focused on historical & geographical descriptions, turning instead to such aspects of life as celebrations, food, religion, carnivals, popular music, folk tales, & cultural identity. He has also failed to address recent interdisciplinary contacts. Problems with his definition of folk culture are enumerated, arguing that it leads to a leveling of the differences between folklore & anthropology with both having Dutch culture as their object. He would have done well to note the concept of social change that is embodied in folklore studies. M. Meeks
