Samenvatting

Significant cross-cultural differences in the level of class voting in Western industrialized countries, 1945-1990, are identified, with Scandinavian countries reporting the highest levels & North American countries reporting the lowest. An overall decline in the level of class voting is also found in all countries since the 1950s. Multilevel analyses of these findings reveal that cross-cultural differences in the level of class voting can best be explained in terms of the religious-ethnic diversity & union density within each country, while the overall decline in the level of class voting can best be explained by the growth in the standard of living in most countries & by the growth in union membership among nonmanual classes in some countries. 4 Tables, 38 References.
