Samenvatting

A multilevel approach is often used by Dutch sociologists to investigate the hierarchical structure of social life. After outlining the typical characteristics of this kind of approach, four theories are reviewed that attempt to explain observed contextual effects in terms of the mechanisms by which they operate: conforming, adapting, choosing, & meeting chances. The operationalization & observation of collective properties & the procedures for a multilevel analysis are also discussed. 13 References. Adapted from the source document.
