Samenvatting

In the journal Facta (1993, 2, 2, Mar, 18-19) Van Vroonhoven published his reaction to Dutch curriculum reform plans for 1993, in which he proposed an alternative approach. In a subsequent issue (1993, 2, 6, Oct 24-27) Van Wetering published a response, focusing on the question of what anthropology really is. Since Oct 1994 much has happened. Now educational planners are looking to reform not only sociology, but anthropology as well. Van Vroonhoven's proposal to reduce anthropology is now being extended to the whole range of social sciences. It is argued here that anthropology deserves more respect. Perhaps the quantitative emphasis in sociology is becoming too strong, impacting other disciplines. Action must be taken immediately to stop this destruction of cultural capital. M. Meeks
