Samenvatting

This analysis of Norbert Elias's The Court Society questions the empirical validity of his historical approach to the development of the early modern European court. Basic principles emerging from Elias's readings of historical interpretation are critiqued, drawing on fifty years of court-related scholarship. It is argued that his misinterpretations of the early modern phases of the court's history build on conventional notions about modernization & the emergence of the bourgeoisie. Some parts of Elias's theories are rejected completely, while others must be reviewed in light of court history. Adapted from the source document.
