Samenvatting

Common attitudes & beliefs in the electorate of a Flemish extreme Right-wing party, the Vlaams Blok, are investigated, drawing on 1992/93 national population samples (total N = 2,691). In support of the theory of economic interests, the data suggest that the Vlaams Blok appeals to ethnocentrism among laborers, & to those with little education. While the theory of symbolic interests, which predicts the far Right alignment of young & nonreligious voters, is partially supported, the hypothesis that the electorate consists of unemployed voters is rejected. No evidence is found to substantiate other theories concerning the authoritarian appeal of the party of the political powerlessness of the electorate. 1 Table, 56 References.
