Samenvatting

In the Netherlands, anthropologists & folklorists are not well acquainted with each other. The concept of folklore, referring to certain aspects of peasant & fishing cultures or to the common culture of the whole nation, is a highly confusing construct in need of replacement by the anthropological concept of culture that is concerned with conflicts about the shaping & interpretation of reality. Despite the theoretical relevance of this observation, most folklorists remain blind to its ultimate consequences. One reason for this may be the lack of a teaching program in folklore, deriving its academic status from the Royal Academy of Sciences with its strong empirical & historical focus. A possible remedy would be for folklore to have a stronger academic identity. Perhaps folklore should be renamed as cultural geography. 58 References. Adapted from the source document.
