Samenvatting

Anthropological knowledge can increasingly be utilized by criminological research for two reasons: (1) criminologists are not fond of being wholly dependent on official sources. Anthropologists, in contrast, are free to collect new data. Their ability to let offenders relate their own tales is highly useful from the standpoint of contemporary rational choice theory. Attention must be paid not to lose the offender's viewpoint; & (2) anthropologists can be specialists on non-Western cultures & therefore can contribute to the cultural dimensions of criminology. Current problems with political correctness are addressed. A case study among Moroccan boys in the Netherlands reveals that respondents expected the researcher not to write conclusions compromising the honor of their group. 51 References.
