Before WWII, few Dutch anthropologists conducted studies on their home soil; rather, they focused on tropical countries. Foreign anthropologists also ignored the Netherlands. However, there has been a steady increase since the 1970s in the number of anthropological studies on Dutch society & culture. Various methodological approaches are enumerated. Key topics include: religion, pillarization, & morality; religion & local elites; commercial & professional cultures; magic, feasts, rituals, & identity; discrimination, racism, & fascism; crime; sexuality; contributions by foreign scholars; culture shock; & ethnographic studies. 430 References.
