Samenvatting

Zygmunt Bauman is a continental thinker, strongly influenced by Hannah Arendt, Martin Heidegger, & Karl Jaspers. Noteworthy features of his works include an approach to sociology as an ideographic science; a concern with morality rather than ethics; the distinctions between mobile, stationary, tempered, & manifest togetherness; quality of life vs the struggle for life; moral improvement; & antiracism. Although he is an accomplished commentator on postmodern social changes, it is argued that he has fallen prey to the same weakness he decries, ie, the fragmentary character of today's lifestyles; he speaks out about the overdose of information on TV & the information highway, while erudite reflection is relegated to the margins of program schedules. Many feel that he has captured the feeling of the late 20th century by describing the ambivalence of life. 3 References. Adapted from the source document.
