research publication quantity vs quality, social scientists, Netherlands

Samenvatting

In the 1980s, productivity of Dutch social scientists began to be measured through citation indices; researchers concerned about job security began to feel that they must publish as many reports as possible. Quantity overrode quality. Many researchers realized the value of extracting the maximum number of articles out of a single research project, & problems with peer review & visiting committees as evaluation tools arose. The move toward a market economy is giving rise to concerns that social scientists will no longer seek to find the truth, but rather, pursue avenues of profit by adjusting their research to fit the demands of business. However, the present bureaucratic system of research also does little to promote scientific integrity. 7 References. M. Meeks
