Samenvatting

A literature review leads to the question of whether significant scientific progress has been made regarding the issue of falling Dutch church membership, ie, unchurching, in the sociology of religion. Such progress could be ascertained by determining if the outcomes of research projects & their implicit theories have been tied to earlier research on this subject & classical issues raised by Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, & Max Weber, ie, inequality, cohesion, & rationality, respectively. For Dutch sociologists, this would be a new approach, since most studies have been highly descriptive with no reference to the classical framework. A historical review shows that the earliest research questions can be reformulated in classical terms, while this is not possible for later studies. Recently, many researchers have sought to relate their findings to utilitarian individualism or rational choice theories, many of which have an economic inspiration. 72 References.
