Samenvatting

To determine whether different social classes construct the problem of unemployment differently in terms of the rights & the obligations of the unemployed, 1990-1992 interview data were obtained from a representative sample of 4,006 Dutch adults. Most respondents supported three main principles: (1) the unemployed's right to social security & their duty to work; (2) declining a job as punishable; & (3) the need to impose harsh sanctions in five specific cases of refusal. The stress on the duty to work is derived from conservative opinions on both distributive justice (economic conservatism) & retributive justice (cultural conservatism). The former stems from a privileged socioeconomic position (high income & infrequent joblessness), while the latter correlates strongly with a low cultural position (technical rather than sociocultural education, overall low educational level, & limited cultural & artistic environment). 4 Tables, 1 Figure, 35 References.
