Samenvatting

In the Netherlands of the 1950s, male secondary school students displayed higher levels of academic achievement, but a review of more recent research shows that girls currently outperform boys in early high school, & then lose this position. To explore this pattern, questionnaire data were obtained in 1991 from 1,500 students ages 12-17, examining variables of sex, social environment, counseling in elementary school, first choice of school following elementary school, & type of school most recently attended. Correlation analysis shows that, for certain subgroups, a sex effect can always be found in favor of girls. This tendency is stronger in Ss' most recently attended institution than in previous schools. A larger more representative study is recommended. 3 Tables, 1 Graph, 35 References.
