Samenvatting

To investigate marriage patterns among the educational elite, in the Netherlands, data on married couples (N = 34,980) compiled from four studies conducted 1991-1994 were reanalyzed, simultaneously investigating the roles of level & type of schooling for five academic disciplines: the humanities, the social sciences, the applied & natural sciences, economic-legal sciences, & medicine. The results demonstrate a strong tendency to marry within rather than across types of schooling, although this kind of homogamy was weaker than the tendency to marry within rather than outside the educational elite. A division could be seen into a cultural elite for the humanities & social sciences & an economic elite for the medical, natural, economic, & legal sciences. Aside from this horizontal differentiation, a hierarchical structuring was observed of the various disciplines. Those in lower-paying disciplines were more likely to marry outside the educational elite. In general, the educational elite was less homogeneous than commonly believed. 5 Tables, 21 References.
