Samenvatting

Confusion exists as to what happened to the working-class subculture that was still dominant in the Netherlands in the 1960s & 1970s; perhaps the processes of underclass formation brought this subculture to an end. The well-organized social life of the lower-class neighborhoods disintegrated & become lost during the 1980s. To examine this process, attention is focused on the Boma neighborhood of Amsterdam. Most of the housing units in this area were built 1965-1968, & many residents at that time worked in nearby textile mills. A decline in this industry resulted in widespread unemployment, which reached 30% in 1984. The population grew more homogeneous, as families of skilled workers or middle-class origin moved away, leaving behind the poorer people with a lifestyle different from that of mainstream Dutch society. This diminished local underclass has not yet become fragmented. 43 References. Adapted from the source document.
