Samenvatting

Research into the factors that affect scholastic achievement of pupils commonly leads to the conclusion that the pupils' socioeconomic descent is more important than their ethnic descent. It is argued here that inferences about the relative effects of both variables are not unequivocal, due to the fact that socioeconomic descent & ethnic descent generally show a substantial correlation. Secondary analyses show that this multicollinearity problem indeed exists, & that differences in pupils' scholastic achievement can be explained by either their socioeconomic or ethnic descent. It is further shown that these differences are not, or only marginally, explained by the unique effects of both variables, but rather by their common variance. Consequently, it is concluded that research in which inferences are made about the relative effects of these variables, but where multicollinearity is not taken into account, must be considered with some reservations. 3 Tables, 2 Figures, 4 Appendixes, 19 References.
