In both sociology & anthropology, actor-oriented methods represent venerable, respected perspectives; however, they are not unquestionable. In this light, a literature review examines five issues: (1) the existence of the multiple, collective actor; (2) free actors & actor-centrism; (3) the romanticized actor & the attraction of voluntarism & methodological individualism; (4) the compatibility of silliness & knowledge embodied in the foolish actor; & (5) the legitimacy of institutional analysis vis-a-vis action-oriented research. 23 References.
