Samenvatting

Since the cultural & political changes that occurred in industrialized countries in the 1960s are characterized by their international nature, it is argued that (historical) generation-sociological analysis with attention to international comparisons, eg, that conducted in Righart's De eindeloze jaren zestig: Geschiedenis van een generatie-conflict ([The Endless Sixties: History of a Generation Conflict] 1995) may be preferable to the traditional politicological approach of James Kennedy, represented in Nieuw Babylon in aanbouw: Nederland in de jarenzestig ([Building New Babylon: The Netherlands in the Sixties] 1995) & "New Babylon and the Politics of Modernity" (1997 [see abstract 9811103]). The claim is exemplified by a comparison between GB & the Netherlands, where the 1960s were moderate & focused on cultural rather than political conflicts; the lower intensity of generational conflicts in GB is moreover related to the general mood of political & economical crisis, the fact that the socially progressive Labor Party was in power 1964-1970, & the comparatively modest baby boom.
