Samenvatting

Discusses James C. Kennedy's historical analysis of the 1960s in the Netherlands in his doctoral thesis Nieuw Babylon in aanbouw: Nederland in de jaren zestig ([Building New Babylon: The Netherlands in the Sixties] 1995) & his "New Babylon and the Politics of Modernity" (1997). Kennedy's interpretation of the facilitation of cultural changes by elites favoring a modernization discourse is deemed very valuable; however, it is argued that his overestimation of the independence of the Dutch cultural revolution from earlier movements in other countries & his failure to use abundantly present empirical resources result in a perspective that is overly general. It is suggested that sequential placement of continuous & discontinuous changes & effects in a more exact & dynamic historical framework, as well as more attention to the causes of the changes, would have provided keener insight into the Dutch cultural revolution as an imitation of protest movements in other countries. 45 References.
