Samenvatting

Using interview data (from 57 youths, ages 12-17) obtained earlier by the author (1996 [see abstract 9702599]) in the Boma neighborhood of the Dutch commune of Kanaalstad-Oost, the local youth subculture is described, & strain & cultural pluralism theories are critized for deterministic models that cannot adequately capture contemporary youth views & relationships. Education level, free-time activities, appearance, competition, group cohesion, mutual prestige, criminality, & employment prospects/reality are discussed. It is noted that youth subculture is itself a factor in reproducing a disadvantaged social position. 49 References. Adapted from the source document.
