Samenvatting

It is argued that the data collected by the Dutch Central Office for Statistics (CBS) present a distorted picture of the population's education level, resulting in inaccurate employment data for the country. According to the 1996 Enquete Beroepsbevolking (Occupation Population Survey), 60% of the potentially employable population, ages 15-65, in the Netherlands have middle or higher education, but, in reality, this number, at least for high school graduates, is 5% (500,000) lower. A translation of this error into unemployment statistics yields an overestimate of the employed at about 200,000 people. The relationship between the incorrect statistics & the increasing rate of nonresponse to government surveys is investigated. 4 Tables, 1 Figure. Z. Dubiel
