Samenvatting

In a reply to Jan Terpstra's (1996) study of the dissolution of homogeneous working-class neighborhoods, the validity of his notion of dominant group is challenged, & B. Wellman & B. Leighton's (1979) concept of local determinism is discussed. Terpstra's claim that working-class culture does not distinguish between the public & private is rejected, & an alternative interpretation is proposed for the role of social distinction in status determination in that N. Elias & J. L. Scotson's (1965) differentiation between the established & outsiders is considered untenable. 12 References. Adapted from the source document.
