Electoral support decline, Christian Democratic Party, Netherlands, 1965-1994

Samenvatting

Examines the decline of electoral support for the (predecessors of the) Christian Democratic Party (CDA) in the Netherlands, 1965-1994, using time-series data from 30 annual cross-sections (N = 876,583). Results show that 19%-24% of the 29% point decrease was associated with trends in behavior, whereas 5%-10% was associated with population changes. Depillarization among Catholics, accounting for a 15%-22% point decrease, constituted a major element in the explanation of the decline. Implications of the findings are discussed. 3 Tables, 4 Figures, 12 References. Adapted from the source document.
