Samenvatting

Cultural & economic conservatism trends in the Netherlands are investigated, drawing on 1970-1992 longitudinal data from some 2,000 respondents (Rs), examining age, cohort, & sex difference. It was found that Rs were less conservative in the cultural than economic domain, & the trend was stronger in women than men. A strong cohort effect in cultural conservatism lessened over time, indicating the succession of increasingly libertarian cohorts. In economic conservatism, which is stronger for men than women, a significant period effect was found in all cohorts, leading to the conclusion that this conservatism is the result of particular historical times. A reversal in the gender gap was shown, women being more conservative than men in 1970, but less in 1992. However, when the influence of structural differences in the social position of both sexes is taken into account, women appear to be less conservative than men since the 1970s. Several explanations for this are considered. 2 Tables, 9 Figures, 58 References. Adapted from the source document.
