A steadily increasing number of ideas & innovations about management & organization is being promoted, eg, total quality management, empowerment, the learning organization, chaos management, & transformational thinking. Many of these ideas have been heavily influenced by scientific studies. In trying to make sense of the conflicting approaches & methodologies, it could be useful to review Norbert Elias's works. Although Elias was not an organizational sociologist in the narrow sense & never displayed great interest in the concerns of managers & consultants, his works can offer starting points for organizational studies. Elias's conceptualization of patterns of organizational change over the last 5 centuries in the West is reviewed. 1 Figure, 25 References. Adapted from the source document.
