Samenvatting

A review of 1990s studies on pillarization, the term for the particular way in which Dutch society has been organized along denominational lines. Some local-level studies have shed light on how pillarization & depillarization have developed, taking place in different ways in different municipalities. It is also apparent that, in the case of some smaller Orthodox Protestant & non-Christian religious groups, there has also been a rise of new "midget pillars." In the field of education, there is still a considerable degree of pillarization, which raises the question of whether continuation of this system in schools should not be seen as a new form of privatization, which has occurred in other sectors of contemporary Dutch society as well. Comparisons are made with pillarization in Belgium. 22 References. Adapted from the source document.
