Samenvatting

The development of Islam among Turkish & Moroccan minoritie in Belgium since the 1960s is examined, based on survey data collected 1991-1993 from 850 Turkish & Moroccan women, ages 17-49, in Flanders & Brussels, & from 2,748 Turkish & Moroccan men, ages 18+, throughout Belgium. It was found that mainstream Islam, represented by the Turkish Diyanet & general, nonaffiliated mosques for Moroccans, is most popular among the pioneer generation of guest workers, whereas among younger generations who were born or had grown up in Belgium, higher degrees of polarization toward either more extremist traditionalist movements or secularization are found. This polarization is much stronger in the Moroccan than in the Turkish community. The data reliability, particularly for the Moroccans, is briefly addressed. 7 Tables, 20 References.
