Samenvatting

Examines young Dutch adults' choices regarding living arrangements, using multinominal regression analysis of data from a longitudinal panel study on social integration conducted among a random sample of 1,125 members of the 1961, 1965, & 1969 birth cohorts via personal interviews & written surveys in 1987 & 1991. It was hypothesized that living arrangement choices (ie, living with parents, living independently, unmarried cohabitation, or marriage) would be influenced by attitudes toward family roles & parenthood; social background & parents' attitudes & religiosity; & by constraints relating to financial independence through employment or parental support & educational status. It was found that attitudes toward family life & social backgrounds influence the choice between marriage & unmarried cohabitation, but the decision to leave the parental home is motivated by opportunities & constraints relating to finances & education, rather than by attitudes. 2 Tables, 1 Figure, 42 References.
