Samenvatting

Discusses the main aspects of the Gulbenkian Commission's report, Open the Social Sciences (1996), on the restructuring of the social sciences, chaired by the president of the International Sociological Assoc, Immanuel Wallerstein. In the report, the 19th- & 20th-century history of sociology, anthropology, history, economics, law, & political science in Europe & the US is reconstructed, & recommendations for future developments in a globalized society are made. It is argued that cross-disciplinary cooperation is necessary for overcoming Eurocentrism & departmentalization, & four dimensions in which this "opening up" of the social sciences can occur are identified. The role of sociology in society is addressed, referring to the 1995 series, "Wozu heute noch Soziologie?" (Why Sociology Nowadays?), in the German magazine Die Zeit as an example.
