Abstract

From the 1970s onwards, in several public institutions in western society, specific rooms have been set apart for ‘silence’. In my dissertation, I define such a ‘room of silence’ as a room in a public (institutional) space, generally accessible to anyone and set apart primarily to offer space for prayer, reflection, meditation and personal ritual.
