The 'Stand of the Chalice'. A Note on a Coptic Liturgical Vessel

Abstract

In this very short note I have been able to present just one of the characteristic features of the Coptic Orthodox Liturgy, which I came across while making an inventory of the Icons in the Coptic Museum in Old-Cairo. I can only hope that further research will enable us to discover more about the origin and the meaning of the 'Stand of the Chalice.

P.P.V. van Moorsel

Prof.Dr. P.P.V. van Moorsel (1931), R.K. priester, doceerde van 1967 tot 1989 Oudchristelijke Kunst te Leiden en vervolgens Koptische Kunst, zowel van 1989 tot 1991 te Leiden als in 1992/1993 te Münster. Sinds 1981 leidt hij het project La Peinture Murale chez les Coptes van het Institut Français d'Archéologie Orientale te Cairo. Hij is secretaris van de Stichting Christelijke Kunst en Cultuur in het Nijldal.
