Abstract

This article draws attention to the small oeuvre of church building designs of the recently deceased Dutch architect Aldo van Eyck. Two closely related designs from the middle of the sixties are specifically discussed: the plan for The Wheels of Heaven, which was never executed, and the Pastoor van Ars-church in The Hague. After sketching briefley the double framework of the contexts of the sixties and today, the church in The Hague is focussed on through image, plan and a brief commentary on architect, time and place. Thus the spirit of the design is evoked. The close interrelation between the design for The Wheels of Heaven and that for the Pastoor Van Ars-church is the authors’ basic assumption.
