Samenvatting

In the works of C.W. Mönnich (1915-1994) we notice extensive and specific attention for liturgy and the arts, more generally for culture. His style, moreover, is characterized by a great artistry. This thread in Monnich’s work can only be understood if we keep in mind that he was a Lutheran theologian, which he clearly emphasizes in his publications. Through his many publications and his position as professor in the University of Amsterdam his influence reached far beyond the boundaries of the Lutheran church. His singularly minded attention for the fields of worship and artistry make him, among other things, an interesting representative of Lutheranism after the Second World War. This article is a presentation of a research project that has just been started at the Evangehsch-Luthers Seminarium (Utrecht University). The research attempts to provide a description of Mönnich’s work from an integral cultural-historical approach, with special attention for the cultural, Lutheran, artistic and methodological perspectives. It also will determine his positions in these fields in the cultural context of the second half of the twentieth century. Finally the project seeks an answer to the question about the relevance of Mönnich’s culture related theology for today.
