Samenvatting

A reply to comments J. Goudsblom on de Swaan's article on the uses of rational choice theory in historical sociology. Historical sociologists need to make pragmatic use of the process approaches of rational choice theory. More attention should be paid to evolution as a process theory. At present, too much emphasis remains on the blind process of natural variation and selection with little thought given to the role of rationality. A literature review shows how rational and maximizing behaviors are largely ignored by historical sociologists. M. Meeks
