Samenvatting

The Net of Limited Possibilities. Considers the rapid growth of the Internet in the past three decades. It is argued that technology itself is not neutral, but must be mediated, shaped, and influenced by the social forces that surround it, and this social influence is strongly evident in the development of the Internet, with its increased possibilities for social exchange and social contact. However, given the limits of human social potential, it is likely that a full exploitation of the possibilities of the Internet will not be achieved because of such factors as corporate control, the persistence of the digital divide, the mercantilization of the Internet, the emergence of filters, funnels, and fee-based services, etc). 15 References.
