Samenvatting

Globalization: More Is Better, under Conditions. In a critique of Nico Wilterdink's "Mondialisering en de mondiale welvaartskloof: trends in inkomensverschillen in de wereld, 1950-1998" ([Globalization and the Global Welfare Gap: Trends in Income Disparities in the World, 1950-1998] 2002), Wilterdink is taken to task for making economist's claims from a sociologist's standpoint and for mixing subjective assumptions about the nature of globalization qua modernization and economic indicators. Wilterdink also refers only to income ratios when discussing such disparities, and refers to globalization as consisting of "economic, technological, and institutional-political changes taking place since the 1970s," whereas it can be argued that globalization as a phenomenon has spanned the 20th century. It is concluded that critiques of globalization should be restricted to the policies of richer countries that continue to exploit poorer ones. 19 References. A. Siegel
