Samenvatting

Recent Views on Depression: Integrative and Intriguing. A review essay on books by (1) Paul Gilbert, Depression: The Evolution of Powerlessness (Hillsdale: Erlbaum, 1992); and (2) Ian H. Gotlib and Constance L. Hammen, Psychological Aspects of Depression. Towards a Cognitive-Interpersonal Integration (Chicester: John Wiley, 1992). These books examine a biopsychosocial approach to depression. Gilbert's book, in which depression is argued to be caused by the loss of status resulting from an inability to accomplish some or any inborn biosocial goals (ie, care eliciting, caregiving, cooperation, and competition), is considered well-wrought and highly integrated, but rather speculative. Gotlib and Hammen emphasize the relation between cognition and (early) personal experience. Their focus on lack of parental care as a cause for depression in later stages of life and their failure to consider organic factors are criticized. To test and refine hypotheses formulated in both books, extensive empirical research is deemed necessary. 30 References. Adapted from the source document.
