Samenvatting

The Narcissism of Minor Differences. The theoretical implications of Sigmund Freud's notion of "the narcissism of minor differences" (ie, minor differences between people who are otherwise alike that form the basis of feelings of strangeness and hostility between them) are explored, arguing that such narcissism underlies a range of conflicts from benign forms of rivalry to civil wars. The notion that social identity lies in difference, and that difference is asserted against what is closest and therefore represents the greatest threat, is traced through major sociological theorists. Examples from recent and current world history are used to illustrate the concept; it is concluded that any general theory of power and violence should consider the narcissism of minor diffferences. 66 References.
