Samenvatting

Membership of Boards of Student Fraternities Corps, RK, SSR between 1920 and 1960 and Access to Dutch Elites between 1960 and 1980. Arguing that the role of selecting elites is executed by student fraternities rather than the German-style university system in the Netherlands, a study was conducted to establish to what extent 3,775 board members of three types of male fraternities, 1920-1960 -- the traditional nonreligious Corps "Corpora," the Orthodox-Protestant SSR (Societas Studiosorum Reformatorum), and the RK (Roman Catholic) fraternities -- had greater access to Dutch elites, 1960-1980. It is found that the importance of board membership of all three types of fraternities, especially the Corps, did not diminish during the period, nor did the importance of other ascribed characteristics (eg, being a member of the nobility); these results support earlier research and contradict generally held notions about increasing meritocracy and other European mobility trends. The thesis that Dutch selective fraternities fulfill the role of selective universities of France, the UK, and the US is thus confirmed. 3 Tables, 12 References. Adapted from the source document.
